Time flies....

High Adventure trips planned by Tim Kenyon
During his 13 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 5, Madison, SD, Tim has found the anticipation of High adventure trips encourages the older Scouts to stay active in the troop.  High adventure trips are in addition to summer camp and monthly weekend campouts.  Tim presents the schedule for high adventure trips years in advance of the actual trip.  He has found that early presentation of trip concepts has encouraged the scouts to participate in fundraising activities and helped them to determine which merit badges to take to be prepared for the different trips.

High adventure trips are not appropriate for all scouts.  There are many determining factors listed for each of the trips.  Within those constraints, every scout has the opportunity to prepare themselves to take advantage of the trip that interests them.

As you read through the information presented about each type of trip you will see that these trips don't happen overnight.  There is detailed planning and a specific time-line unique to each trip.  An adult in the troop needs to take the lead and be responsible for the details.

Which adults in the Troop are eligible to go on high adventure trips?  Tim stresses that the adults who want to go need to be Registered, Active and Trained.  They need to be a R.A.T.  The trip should be a product of their participation, not their reason for participating.  These trips are not family vacations.  Siblings and spouses who don't qualify for the trip on their own merits are not included in the trip.
